Area-Based Conservation:Exploring opportunities for Pacific area-based approaches to contribute to achieving 30x30 through OECMs

This session explores how Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs) can support achievement of the 30×30 target while recognising Pacific-led conservation approaches, customary tenure, traditional knowledge and community stewardship. It will clarify the defining characteristics of OECMs and assess their compatibility with existing locally managed marine areas, tabu areas, community-conserved areas and other Pacific area-based approaches. Participants will identify legal, institutional, technical, financial and social barriers, alongside opportunities for appropriate recognition and reporting. The session will develop practical recommendations to advance equitable, culturally grounded and effectively governed OECMs across the Pacific.
